According to NBC News, President Donald Trump informed Cabinet officials last week that billionaire Elon Musk is expected to step down from his role within the administration in the coming months.
A senior government source mentioned to NBC that Musk, whose DOGE team is involved in a contentious initiative to reduce federal spending, will conclude his special government employee tenure after 130 days.
This designation, SGE, limits an individual’s workdays to 130 each year. Having begun on January 20, Musk will reach this cap by the end of May.
Earlier on Wednesday, Politico reported that the Tesla CEO will be departing from the Trump administration shortly.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed this report as “garbage” in a tweet.
“Both Elon Musk and President Trump have publicly confirmed that Elon will step away from public service as a special government employee once his extraordinary work at DOGE concludes,” Leavitt tweeted.
On Monday, Trump remarked to reporters, “I think he’s done an incredible job, but he also has a significant company to manage… Eventually, he will return. He wants to.”
“I’d keep him for as long as I could,” the president added.
However, during a March 10 interview with Fox Business, Musk was asked by host Larry Kudlow, “Are you planning to stay for another year?”
Musk responded, “Yeah, I think so.”
He has been the primary financial supporter of Trump’s 2024 campaign.
On Tuesday night, the conservative candidate Brad Schimel, backed by Musk and Trump, was unsuccessful in his bid for a position on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
