Mike Myers is featured in a commercial for Canada’s Liberal Party that endorses new Prime Minister Mark Carney while subtly criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump.
In the advertisement, Myers and Carney are seen conversing inside a hockey rink, both wearing red and white jerseys emblazoned with “Canada,” and a Canadian flag can be spotted on the wall behind them.
Carney, who shared the ad on his X (formerly Twitter) account, inquires about Myers’ presence at the rink.
“I just thought I’d come by and check things out,” Myers replies.
“You live in the States,” Carney points out.
“Yeah, but I’ll always be Canadian,” Myers answers.
Carney then reminds Myers that he resides in the U.S. before launching into a quick quiz about Canadian culture, covering topics such as characters from the children’s TV show Mr. Dressup, the capital of Saskatchewan, and strategies during specific hockey plays.
“What are the two seasons in Toronto?” Carney asks at the end of the quiz.
“Winter and construction,” Myers replies, prompting Carney to remark: “Wow, you really are Canadian.”
Myers then poses a question to Carney: “Mr. Prime Minister, will there always be a Canada?”
Carney assures him: “There will always be a Canada.”
Myers concludes with “elbows up,” a phrase that Carney echoes, referencing the gesture that has become a unifying chant for Canadians resisting Trump, who has threatened tariffs on Canadian goods and suggested that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state.
At the ad’s conclusion, Myers turns away from the camera, displaying his jersey that features the word “Never” and the number “51.”
The term “elbows up” originates from a signature move by Canadian hockey icon Gordie Howe. Myers also mouthed the phrase and tapped his left elbow during a recent appearance on Saturday Night Live.
NPR reports that Canada’s Liberal Party was on the brink of a “historic election defeat” until former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation in January, followed by Trump initiating a trade war with Canada. After securing a Liberal party election to succeed Trudeau, Carney took office on March 14 and will compete against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in a general election scheduled for April 28.
